Spindler's inspiration for the design came from the product's berry base. She aimed to give it a fruity feel, but not in an overt way. This led to the creation of a form with a clear organic influence and clever colour accents. The jars are made from frosted acrylic with a purple insert, giving them a subtle diffused burst of colour and vitality.
The unique properties of the design lie in its modern and refreshing revitalization of the brand, subtly alluding to its berry origins. The form and colour palette realize this, supported by the hand-lettered brand mark and insignia. The design is different from others in its sophisticated and understated representation of the brand's high-quality core ingredient - Australian blueberries.
The design realization technology involved the use of frosted acrylic jars with coloured polypropylene inserts and lids. The bottles are blow-molded polypropylene. The box housing each product features two shades of purple with a subtle high-build varnish and emboss, while the inside of the box is a paler shade of purple. The bottles and jars are designed in a complimentary, paler shade of purple.
The design project started in July 2015 in Australia and was launched in September 2016 in Australia and China. The project was a rejuvenation, and it was important to understand the brand's journey and where the client expected it to go. The design research led to the creation of the brand insignia, two interwoven 'S's', symbolizing two sisters in spirit and in passion. This became a key packaging element and gives it a somewhat ethereal beauty.
The design was not without its challenges. Ensuring exacting details were maintained at manufacture was a significant hurdle. However, the team saw an opportunity to elevate the brand from basic to lifestyle, focusing on its high-quality core ingredient - Australian blueberries. The packaging design, bespoke hand-lettered brand mark and insignia are subtle, understated and sophisticated - all hallmarks of premium products in the skincare category.
The design was awarded Silver in A' Packaging Design Award in 2017, a testament to its outstanding expertise and innovation. The award is rewarded to top-of-the-line, creative, and professionally remarkable designs that illustrate strong technical characteristics and splendid artistic skill. These designs introduce positive feelings, amazement, and wonder.
